Our reports include: Biofuels, Marine Renewables, Carbon Offsets, Wind, Cap-and-Trade, Renewable Investment, Solar, and Oil Savings.

Critical Decision-Making

Our policy and political team stays on top of the fast-moving legislative process. The Helios legislative tracker is constantly updated with the latest bills and amendments introduced in Congress and our team monitors their status and progress. Helios strives to have the most up-to-date information so we can help our clients predict what will likely transpire in energy policy so that they can make informed decisions about their business strategy. The Helios team, plus the many resources of SMI, has contacts in both chambers of Congress, in both parties, in the administration and a unique perspective into the outside constituency groups that help shape policy.

Shaping Public Policy

There are few higher priorities in Congress and in state legislatures across the nation than energy and climate change policy. It is also one of the most rapidly evolving bodies of policy as lawmakers scramble to develop solutions and policy supports to tackle new urgencies that come from a changing global environment, national security, and an innovative economy. Leveraging SMI's government relations and public policy experience, we are positioned to guarantee that our clients have an effective voice in the policy debate.

The Helios team has access to a wide range of expertise to help your business plan for the future. Our work with clients has given us a depth of insight into every aspect of successful business planning and how to engage public policy to support that success. Whether it be anticipating policy changes that will impact the economic landscape, taking advantage of public financing to make technology breakthroughs, or getting the federal and/or private financing support to bring your technology to scale.

A Track Record of Success

Helios Strategies parent lobbying firm SMI, has delivered significant results for its renewable energy and energy efficiency clients. The launch of Helios represents a commitment by SMI to elevate the level of service for those clients and future clients with a stake in the new energy future.

Ocean Renewable Energy Coalition

SMI is at the forefront of defining the emerging marine renewables industry. Advanced research and breakthrough technologies are beginning to reshape the way we think of how to harness energy from the nation's water. Marine renewable energy includes technologies that harness the power of waves, current, tides, and thermal variations. SMI's clients include firms like Verdant Power who are developing and demonstrating hydro-kinetic turbines in the East River, to Ocean Power Technologies harnessing energy from the ocean waves. To assist the development of this fledgling industry, SMI co-founded the Ocean Renewable Energy Coalition and successfully pushed through legislation that includes these types of projects in the federal definition of renewable energy.

Research and Development Funding

Over the past five years, SMI has secured more than $35 million dollars for its renewable energy and energy efficiency clients. This research funding has helped to advance breakthroughs that further the development of unique renewable energy technologies. This funding has helped to turn the currents of the tides and waves into electricity, capture and store energy from wind turbines, and expand the U.S. domestic capacity for solar PV production. SMI has also secured demonstration funding for clients to help power military bases with clean energy.

Federal/State Policy and Political Knowledge for your Business Strategy

SMI has helped many of its clients to make informed decisions about investment and expansion based not only on federal policy but also the policy and political landscape in the states. Several of our clients were able to expand manufacturing capacity into other states securing subsidies from the state to defray the cost of the expansion and led to the creation of hundred's of new jobs for the state.
